Your first visit to the dental practice.

Updated: May 11, 2021

One of the commonest reasons that people give for not coming to the dental practice is fear. Many people are nervous about visiting the dentist. The dental practice can be a daunting environment for people who haven't been for a long time as they don't quite know what to expect. However, once you trust the practice and develop a connection with the dental staff, it becomes a pleasant experience that you won't have to give a second thought.

I assure you that we are all committed to giving you the best experience possible.

You will be required to fill out a complete medical history on your initial visit which will be checked and updated at every subsequent visit. This is to ensure that we have the most up-to-date record of your medical history as changes can affect your treatment and it is essential that we know what medical issues you have so that we can plan the appropriate treatment.

Your initial visit would usually be a check-up/ examination.

At this initial appointment, we check all the teeth, the fillings, the gum condition, look for any signs of oral cancer and all aspects of the head and neck. The exam appointment is a fact-finding appointment and to understand what is going on with your mouth and associated areas. Radiographs are taken at this appointment to assess what is going on under the gum level, between the teeth, and under the enamel or fillings, as these are the areas that cannot be seen by just looking at the teeth.

You will be presented with a treatment plan which enumerates all the problems that you have and the options of treatment available to solve those problems. Once you have decided what treatment you wish to have, the payment options will be explained. There are options of taking finance on private treatments.

No treatment can usually be provided at this initial appointment. We would make subsequent appointments to carry out the treatment in the shortest and most comfortable way.

Occasionally, your initial appointment may be an emergency.

At this emergency, we will assess the chief problem that you have come for and try to do what we can to get you out of pain. This will not be the complete treatment and you would need subsequent appointments for the actual treatment with your registered dentist once the emergency care has been carried out as leaving it may cause the problem to resurface.

With any dental treatment, the adage 'A stitch in time saves nine' holds good. The longer you leave a problem, it usually becomes more severe and will not heal by itself. It is therefore advisable that you consult with a dentist to check that there is nothing else going on.

If you have pain/ sensitivity, the sensitivity may subside and feel better temporarily but the cause of the sensitivity may still remain.

Another reason why many people don't visit the dentist is that they believe dental treatment to be expensive. Contrary to that belief, dental treatment alone is not expensive but neglect is. Years of neglect cannot be corrected in a single appointment and without any cost.

As touched upon briefly above, we do offer a number of payment plan options.

Look at your first visit to the dentist as an investment into your teeth's future. Take the first step to have healthy teeth and get that smile you always wanted. It's never too late.
